BMW used the same fuel pump for about 10 years on the L-jetronic and motronic cars. It will work just fine. Be prepared to spend some time getting a mounting bracket together, when I put L-jet on my 69 Bavaria that took longer than running the return line and the fuel pump wiring. The OE bracket is welded in place with a couple of relatively (for sheet metal) large beads, not just a couple of spot welds you can drill out. And yes, it is in the same place as a 320i, kind of behind the RR wheel. 164 (?) horsepower in a 2002? Yeah, that does sound like fun!
