Buying from a distance is risky. I don't know what kind of arrangement you have, but if you can have the car checked out at a reputable shop, I think you'll come away with less heartache.
Otherwise, I can give you my experiences, since I've owned three over the years.
As soon as you get the car (any 20 yr old for that matter), change ALL the belts and hoses, including water, fuel and vacuum - unless the seller can show they were changed very recently. Get a new thermostat and fuel filter as well.
The oil pressure sending unit (oil pressure sensor) tends to spring leaks. Ox sensors get fouled easily. Valve cover gasket sometimes leaks. The drive shaft suspension bearing is a common problem, but easily replaced. Brakes are generally very reliable, and pleasantly simple to work on. Fortunately these are just maintenance items, but if neglected, will come back to haunt you.
These cars will tend to burn oil. A quart-a-month is common. Usually it's because the seals over the valve guides are letting oil through. Main point: check you oil EVERY time you gas up.
The bigger stuff I had to replace are:
1. The front suspension components. With labor twice cost me about $1000, but well worth it.
2. Automatic transmissions are not as reliable as manual. Get it serviced every year.
3. Manual transmissions are very reliable, but clutch jobs are a tad expensive.
4. The rear trunk hinges tend to gall and bind. Keep it greased well.
5. Leather interior (seats) tend to dry and crack badly, as well as the dash boards.
6. Electric motors and switches - usual Gremlins.
Good Luck!
