Having owned both, and put a lot of miles on both, I don't think there is much difference in handling between the two. The E28 might be a little crisper, but not by much, tires make such a difference also. But, the E12 isn't plagued by the front end shimmies like the E28 is. And while some will differ I'm sure, I rather perfer the early front end, it's more stable and trouble free.
