There is a difference, but I think the E12 is potentially better.

As stock, the 535i is stiffer, less roll, gives the impression of agressive handling.

As stock, the E12 is a little more passive. More comfortable. BUT the E12 can be stiffened dramatically with a new set of struts. This simple and relativly inexpensive upgrade will really liven up the suspension. More agressive wheels and tires, and Watch Out!

I completely agree with MikeW. The brakes don't shimmy in the E12 like they do in the E28/E24, and they are a pleasure to work on.

We have 2 528i(s), first one since 1990. I rebuilt the entire front suspension on these, including new shocks. The difference is night and day. I think the suspension/brake characteristics are the best kept secret with these cars.
