My 528i was the best car I ever had. It did everything well and just never seemed to break. The US 320i is a bit slow, quicker reflexes, but I don't think it handles better, or even as good for that matter. It is pretty reliable but a bit crude for a everyday car these days. And the E21 isn't even that more economical, I get 23-24 in suburban driving, 20-21 out of the 528i. The three does do better on the road however. My comments only apply to the 528i, not the 530i as I feel it was not nearly as good a car primarly due to the smog controls.
