On two of my e12z, and 80 and an 81, both door locking systems started working when I replaced the ground cable entirely on one and replaced the secondary ground (braided strap) from the battery to the fender well (just under fuse box). The locking systems seems to rely on a good ground from the battery directly to the body. Even the gas cap lid lock started working.
