There isn't much you can do without spending a lot of money, cranking in some additional ignition advance is about it. I usually timed mine at about 1500 instead of 2200 or whatever it is that BMW spec's. But you may need to run mid grade gas. Believe it or not, the most cost effective way to improve performance horsepower wise is to upgrade it to a 3.5 engine. You can get a used one for less than the price of a cam and that way you can still pass smog if needed.
