time to replace lower end bearings? (archive)

Hi

I am pulling my 3.5 Euro spec engine for a paint job and am thinking about checking and/or replacing the lower end rod bearings with Plastigage. The current bearings have run about 70000 mls since I replaced all bearings, piston rings, etc. on an original 55000 mls engine. The engine was, of course well within specs at that time and I expect it to be now as well, despite spirited driving with Mobil1 oil and virtually no oil consumption. I definitely am not going to pull off the head, however I feel it can't hurt to take a look at the difficult to reach lower end bearings while the engine is out.

What are your thoughts on this (over confident?) approach and what have you used as a good, low-cost source for quality OEM bearings? Thanks.

Best Regards, Tom Colitt
