So I took my overheating 86 528e (254K miles) to a mech and he promptly told me the fan clutch needed replaced: "when the engine is running real hot your can stop the fan with a rolled up magazine ... fan clutch is bad". So he replaced it and the thermostat for good measure. A couple weeks later we relocated to So Florida (much warmer clime than So Oregon) and the car is still overheating. I stick a magazine in the fan blades when the engine is hot and sure enough: fan stops, bad fan clutch. I purchase another fan clutch online (much cheaper this time) and put it in my self. Now the fan clutch seems to be operating intermittantly, more often when I just open the hood. If I tinker around with the hood up for 15-20 mins then the fan clutch seems to never engage. And I am still overheating ... Question: is there a mystery to the fan clutch that I don't know about? I am also considering replacing the water pump (cheap) and replacing the radiator (not cheap, at least on my budget). I would be grateful for any comment. -SFingerson
