Is this a V8 inside an E21 ? See Picture (archive)

It's taken out of an old '80s Roundel issue, Scene from one of those Oktoberfest gatherings....

I can't tell whether this is a V8 or a V6. I wouldn't think that there's any advantage to transplanting a V6. What do y'all think ?
