E21 Charging problem? (archive)

Hi
I have just changed to a new Varta 66AH battery. For the past 7 days everything was ok. ('82 E21)
This morning, I noticed the battery was weak. Driving to work (about 20km) and reaching the carpark, I stopped the car and then tried to restart it, the battery seemed dead.

Is it my alternator? How do I check? Can I "service" the alternator short of changing one ($$)? If it is a leak, how can I troubleshoot this?
Please reply soon as this is driving me nuts!
