'82 320i for "work" car... (archive)

I'm considering an '82 320i/5spd for a second high miles work car. This one already has 220k on it, has a bit of body rust around the wells and on the front of the hood. The car runs well and seems to be fairly sound considering its age/mileage. The one problem I noted is a rattle coming from somewhere near the oil filler cap (valve bearings?). It almost sounds like a diesel when driving, but the engine runs quite well considering. Are there specific problems to look for (like a Honda needing a water pump/timing @ ~90k)? Also, if well maintained and cared for, how many miles would be a realistic expectation. Oh yeah, I can get it for $400.

Thanks from a possible BMW newbie,
-Pete
