MY 84 318i HAS 200K AND RUNS LIKE NEW. 320I WAS MY LAST LOVE. Adjust valves easy to do with a Bentley manual or haines manual, timing and plugs should eliminate noise. My 320i always had a noisy head. And my brothers 82 320i had noisy valves until i adjusted them. Watch this board for loads of valuable advise. If someones problem sound familiar use info to do preventative maintenance and you could reasonably get another 100k or more. For 400$ and running good you could afford rust repair and more. Bentley Manual a must.
: I'm considering an '82 320i/5spd for a second high miles work car. This one already has 220k on it, has a bit of body rust around the wells and on the front of the hood. The car runs well and seems to be fairly sound considering its age/mileage. The one problem I noted is a rattle coming from somewhere near the oil filler cap (valve bearings?). It almost sounds like a diesel when driving, but the engine runs quite well considering. Are there specific problems to look for (like a Honda needing a water pump/timing @ ~90k)? Also, if well maintained and cared for, how many miles would be a realistic expectation. Oh yeah, I can get it for $400.
: Thanks from a possible BMW newbie,
