Thanks for the input! From all the research I've been doing here and on the e21 listserv archives, it looks like I'd be in good shape. I'm having a local import shop check it out tomorrow, mainly to diagnose the possible valve noise, and if all goes well I'm going to grab it.

I've been able to check the main rust area culprits and the rear shock towers and most of what I could see underneath are in good shape. Even the spare tire well is rust free (at least inside). There is a screw wedged in the hazard switch and a frisbee in the glove box to collect water, but after last night's research, I can fix both problems with ease.

Something strange has been going on since I first test drove it, it's been calling my name :) And I now know that those who think I'm nuts just don't have "vision".
