Well, no luck.I checked EVERYTHING, and while I am now intimately familiar with 79 bimmer fuel injection systems (and the taste of gasoline . . .) I could not get the motor to stay running for more than about 10 seconds. My battery is now being recharged at my friends house. I also managed to smash the tube from the intake to the additional air slide into a million pieces (who would have thought it'd be that brittle?) I had spark, dist was not cracked, coil was ok. intake boot was without leaks, checked the baffle plate. The car goes to the mechanic tommorow. Hopefully I can find someone who is ok with the idea of DE-SMOGGING the motor. when I find out what is wrong, I will post again, just in case someone else ever runs across this bear of a problem. Thanks again, everyone for your thoughts and suggestions. I did find quite a few other little problems I need to adress when I get the car running again.
