All my problems turned out to be inside the alternator itself - new (rebuilt) Bosch - the brushes were hung up and shorting. The garage replaced them and the car is now 100%. Guess the exercise of eliminating other causes was a good one - I know the wiring system very well now. Thanks for the suggestions along the way!
