In Reply to: How to get 150-200hp in a 320i? posted by Former_320i_owner on February 18, 2000 at 19:55:28:

If you're willing to put the time and money into it, I'd say your best bet is to run dual 40 or 45 DCOE weber carbs. If you combine this carb setup with a ported, polished head, a 292 (or up) cam, a balanced, strong bottom end (w/higher compression forged pistons) and a 2002tii exhaust manifold or header you should be good for about 160 horse or so. At least this is what us 02 owners think is the best setup. In the 2002, this motor can be a bit much for the squeamish (and possibly the structural rigidity of the car) but in the slightly bulkier 320i this should be a very quick combo. I'm sure there's a way to get an E30 motor in a 320, but this would be very very expensive, those motors are hard to come by.

If top speed (freeway traffic) is your problem, consider putting a 5speed+3.90LSD in a 79-below 320. The extra torque of the true 2.0 gives good response, the 3.90 quickens pickup acceleration, and the 5 speed overdrive (easily borrowed from the 80-82 320) assures you won't run out of revs. My 79 4 speed will hold 105 at about 5 grand, w/ a 3.90. a 5 speed overdrive would bring the rpms down by about 1000, or so I'm told. This combo will run around 400-600 dollars, while building a motor can get into the thousands. Of course, for a truly quick machine, do all of this. Just some thoughts, hope this helps.
