Some of you may remember my posting (2/22) on this board, as well as a couple on the '02 board. . . well, I finally bought the 323i (w/88 325i conversion) from the gentleman here in Denver on Saturday. Yay!!! I paid a fair price for the market here considering the car is in very good shape mechanically, and only needs a couple of tweaks/improvements.

A friend and I took the car driving to the mountains nearby (dirt, pavement, switchbacks, etc...) and the car amazed me even more than when I drove it before I bought. I LOVE THIS CAR!!! The thing really kicks ass! There are a couple of things that concern me though - -

1. The front wheel bearings were loose at the end of the drive. I believe the previous owner replaced the bearings a short time ago, and maybe the shop just didn't tighten them down enough to compensate for the "settling in" they experience when they are repacked. Upon returning home, I repacked the outside taper bearing and tightened the nut until the hub was no longer spinning freely, and then backed it off very slightly (couple degrees) until the resistance was gone. BUT - driving to work today, they seem to be loosening (settling) again. How much should I tighten the bearings? (I've heard 60 ft/lb, but would've been really wrenching hard) . . . please advise…

2. Before working on the bearings, I started to jack the front end up using the front jack panel (on the body - ack!) and it was pretty much rusted through. Is there any way to treat this to fix the problem until I have the metal replaced?

3. I would like to tighten up the steering response a little bit. Are there any easy tweaks on this car that do this?

Thanks for the help!
