Hey there, I have done it and all it does is make the car real noisy under the floorboard. I have a straight pipe and it makes a really nice droaning noise in the passenger compartment. If you want to go with a straight exhaust I would put some kind of free flowing resonator where the cat used to be, kind of like a cherry bomb ar something along those lines (kind of like the 02 guys) as for the perforance, well not a gain for me, not using a header though just a tii ex. manifold.

: Can't wait to see some responses on this. I'm planning on the same thing for my '81 320i. Anyone?

: : I want to put a header and a ansa muffler on my 320i 82. I will remove the cathalyser at the same time and have a bigger custom pipe fitted from the front to the back. Is it a good idea for sound and performance?Am I gonna have problems with my idle?
