E21 Offset? (archive)

I've searched this forum, and it appears the correct offset for the standard 13 X 5.5 wheels is 13mm. Is this correct?

What is offset a measure of? I assume it is something to do with spacing from rotor? A little lesson here would help me out.

I assume offset is different depending on wheel rim width? Is this correct?

And finally, I am thinking about upgrading and oversizing the rims for my 320i (sorta S). If I were to go with 14 X 6.5 or 15 X 6.5, what would the proper offset be?

Thanks.

(just got my 320i to pass inspection. It has a limited slip diff, rear sway bar, and recarros thanks to Jim at BMW Parts Locator Service. I'm VERY psyched. Now, pending wife's approval, I will investigate larger rims - after tax time)
