I just had the pleasure of dealing with a local BMW dealership, trying to get a dist. cap for a '79 323i. I ordered it (and paid) a week ago, go down today and pick it up. I look at it while I'm standing there and there's no center spring loaded contact that goes to the top of the rotor. I told the parts guy that I think there's a piece missing and he started checking all the pictures in the manuals and microfiche. He didn't see anything and said that's probably the way they are. Sure, its a grey market car and I don't expect many people to know much about them, but this guy tried to convince me that the spark just jumped from the recessed hole in the cap to the top of the rotor! I left the cap there, got my money back and went home. I looked at the old cap (with cracks and in pieces) and the center post was just like I thought it would be, a spring and a contact post. I called back and the parts guy said, "Oh, well they're probably sold seperately then, should I order one for you?". What the hell has happened to people who know what they're doing these days?
In my many years of work on and around cars I've never heard of a dist. cap coming without a center contact. Why would you ever want one without the other?
Am I full of it guys? Do "they" really sell these things that way? The sad part is, I'll probably have to go back and get that cap from the dealer and just use the old contact. I don't want to wait another week getting it from someone else.
Frustrated,
Dan
