In the sound/performance area you mentioned.
I have first hand experience with Borla on my 528i (with 535 engine) -- needed to go back and add a resonator to muffle a resonant peak at commomly used 2300-2600 RPM.
I have second hand experience with Flowmaster, subjective power improvement, sound is acceptable.

If durability is your main concern, I'd recommend OEM. On both the 528 and 320, OEM went well over 120K.

As usual, YMMV.
