78 320i - Driving fine & then....backfire, sputter (archive)

Was driving home tonight doing just fine. Cruising @ 50mph or so. Started to b/fire, sputter and jerk. Then straightened up for a mile or so. Started losing power, backfiring...had to pull off. Checked points and cap. Replaced points with old set. Thought maybe the points had crapped out. No dice. Car started and i took off again, but the same symptoms happened and got worse. Had to call tow truck to get home.
Possible problems here. Fuel pump? Timing Chain? Any hints or tips from veterans would be appreciated.
