I had a similar problem recently.
I agree with above post that it could be condensor
related, or maybe your coil is fading.
it sounds quite like my situation (even the tow!) I went thru and inspected/cleaned every connection. Found several questionable connections
Replaced points/rotor/cond./coil.
It runs better than ever now.
