323i Smog Equipment Removal (archive)

I just aquired a clean 1981 323i from a guy in CA. I plan to invest some $ in to it mainly for wheels, suspension, and whatever I can afford to squeeze more power out of the engine. To make a long story short, this California car was totally converted to meet CA smog regs and etc and whatever was done has just sucked all of the performance out of it. The guy I bought it from says that it has been that way since the conversion in 85. My question is, what can be done to eliminate the smog stuff?? I live in Washington and in a rural area that does'nt require emissions testing. I will have to pass the test once to transfer title but after that I will be free to make any mod's I want. I understand that without knowing what equipment the car has on it you can't easily be specific but what can you tell me in general. I can tell you that the car does have a catalytic converter and I plan to do away with it but will this bring me back up to the 140+ HP that the car should produce??
