78 320i - Alternator Arcing (archive)

I've been working out a drivability problem with this 3201. While checking things out, vac leaks, etc.,etc.,... I noticed the alternator is arcing against the alt mounting bolt next to the thermostat housing. Needless to say, I was shocked.....sorry..bad joke...
I haven't lost the battery, however it's always had a faint alt light glow. I've had multiple 8amp fuses pop in the last several weeks plus fog and parking lamps go out. Also have noticed while driving at night very slight flickering of headlamps, almost imperceptable. This is a fairly new alt and volt regulator from BavAuto.
By the looks of things, could this be part of the problem?
As in rough idle, cutting out (like worn points), backfiring.
Any ideas what may have caused this anomaly.

We certainly appreciate your input!
