oxygen sensor (archive)

Have a 1980 320i with 150,000 miles. Replaced oxygen sensor couple years ago ... now dash light is on again. I guess every 30,000 miles that light goes on.
Is it relatively easy to replace? (I'm slightly more mechanically inclined than my golden retreiver). Has anybody ever experienced any damage to their catalytic converter by not replacing?
