Which engine to put in a 323i Baur?? (archive)

I found an '82 323i Baur in my area that I 'm thinking of buying. It was imported to the US shortly after purchase and then lived in CA. The car has 127k on the original engine (burns some oil) and will need a tranny. The body however is great. Because the price is good, I'm thinking this may the perfect candidate for a driveline replacement. The question is which one. I know I can go to 2.7l with an "eta" block, or I can do a 87-91 325i engine. Or, I can do an S14 M3 engine...I think. Does anyone have expereince with an engine swap on a 323i...what did you choose and why, how has it turned out? I plan on using the car for a 3-4 day a week spirited driving car.
