I have a small autoair repair shop here in Australia, and can tell you that here in Australia BMW E21s have 2 completely different a/c sytems fitted from factory. Early cars have a Behr system
that seems to be completely german ( although the compressor is actually a nippondenso 6p148 rebranded behr ) Later type E21s have a complete nippondenso system fitted ( My 1982 323i has it )
that runs a 6p127 compressor which is branded nippondenso. I read talk of converting to a "modern" sanden compressor here often and have to say that in my experience the denso comp is the far superior unit. The easy way to tell is with the behr the pipes are on the same side of the filter/dryer, one top and one bottom, with the denso the pipes are both at the top at right angles. Furthermore the biggest letdown with the system is the evaporator size/design, putting a bigger compressor on will achive nothing.
