Servicing oil in Manual Steering box for 323i (archive)

Question:

Is it necessary/advisable to drain oil & refill the steering box as routine maintenance ?

Should servicing steering box oil be performed every 25k miles or each time the timing belt's replaced?

How difficult is this to do at home (ie, is there a drain plug & refill hole located on the box ? )

what type of oil should be used ? I would like to use synthetic but would like to hear from others whether using
synthetic will result in leaks with existing gasket.
