: i heard the correct offset is 13mm, but my wheel says et 18 could someone shed some light on the subject? thanks

The offset that is correct on your car depends on the size of the wheel. We will consider a E21 that you want to fit 15"x7" wheels... The correct offset would be ET 13 (this means from the real center of the wheel in wide, the face that bolts to the brake disc is 13 mm on the outside of the wheel).
If you wanted to fit ET24 wheels, the wheel would be too much inside the fender so you would have to fit a 11 mm spacer, but 10 mm would still be OK to get as close as possible to the ET 13... and not have cornering problems...you have to deduce the size of the spacer from any ET number.
If you wanted to fit less than ET13 or even a negative ET wheel, then the wheel would be outside the fender and you would have other problems.. like the fender touching the tire when the suspension goes down.
I hope this is clear enough... if not e-mail me, i may have a picture explaining ET somewhere at home... i could still scan it.
