320i Injection Woe's (archive)

Recently I purchased my second Bimmer an 80 320i. This is my 1st encounter with the fuel injection cars. The car starts great and idles smoothly, however when I accelerate and try to shift it falls flat and feels as though it runs out of gas. When I lift from the throttle it comes back. Fuel pump sounds strong, have not changed filters yet nor have I dug into any other mechanicals.
Any suggestions where I should begin?
