The grounding arrangement on the 4-cyl version of this car is poor. The negative battery cable screws to a bracket that is welded to the battery pan. If the pan is badly rusted, there may not be a very good connection to the body. I recently bought new stock BMW battery cables (cheap and good quality because the connectors are soldered to the copper strands) and sanded the pigtails and the bracket. I also bought a new stainless screw. Then, I added a ground strap ($4 at the parts place), which I attached to the same bracket. The ground strap drops down and connects to the bracket that holds the bumper piston. I had to sand the bracket to be sure of a good electrical connection. This way, current does not depend on flowing through the battery pan but can go up the ground strap. This has helped reduce the erratic idle on my car, making me sure that I had formerly had a poor ground.
