Want to buy-scared of repair costs (archive)

I am looking into buying an 88 or 89 325 convertible. I have heard terrible stories about repair and maintenance costs. One friend spent $6,000 replacing transmission on '93. Just how expensive are these cars to maintain? HELP! I really want to buy one that will probably go quick.
