First off, an 88-92 325 Convertable is an E-30, so you might get better responce there. E-30 board)
What you have to keep in mind about BMWs (or Porsche or Mercedes) is that a neglected one will cost you more per month than a new one.
If you cannot work on it yourself, buy the best one you can afford. Absolutely insist on records and pass on any car that does not have them. Go for a little older car with better maitenance.
Things to look for:
Timing belt: if it has not been changed every 60,000 you are on borrowed time. Its a diaster when it breaks. gives no warning, change it regularly.
Oil Changes and valve adjustments. Keep these up, valve train wear is common, if the motor is noisy, make the seller fix it before you buy.
Maitenance is not apreciably more expensive than any other car. It does not have to be done at a dealer, just by a qualified person/independant.
Stay away from the automatics and "E" cars as a general rule.
: I am looking into buying an 88 or 89 325 convertible. I have heard terrible stories about repair and maintenance costs. One friend spent $6,000 replacing transmission on '93. Just how expensive are these cars to maintain? HELP! I really want to buy one that will probably go quick.
