My son John also has an AC with a dead compressor and needs the electric fan to keep the motor cool in traffic -- I'm thinking of taking out the compressor and condensor to reduce front end weight, but not distrubing the stuff in the interior. That would be an easy matter of hacksaw and unbolting work, once the system was properly and safely evacuated of R12.
: Also, I'll be replacing springs and shocks this summer. I heard somethinig about an oil I need to pour in the strut housing before I put the shock in...what type of oil do I need? Is there anything else special I need? I have the Bilstien Sports and BavAuto Springs...what else?
I just did the struts on John's car in April -- the Haynes manual says to use 30 cc. of motor oil in each strut. That's only about 2 tablespoons. Since they don't specify any particular viscosity, I just used Castrol 20/50 GTX. I suspect that the main purpose of this oil is to serve as a heat transfer medium from the insert to the outer shell of the strut so that it can be radiated away -- such heat build-up is not likely to be a major problem in USA driving conditions unless you're running a serious pro-rally or the Pike's Peak hillclimb.
