: I have a 1983 E21 Auto, what should the MPG be on average? Its getting WAY under what the manual says. I get about 18mpg on average while the manual claims it should be 35-40.

Craig, if you are referring to miles per Imperial gallon, 18 does seem a bit low. For 19 years, my average annual mileage has been between 23 and 24 miles per U.S. gallon, remarkably consistent. My best highway performance in summer is about 28, but it deteriorates to only 20 in winter stop-an-go driving around town. You have an automatic, and if you are driving in town, your mileage may be about right for this 17-year-old car (small engine, heavy body).
