In the late '77 BMW had three Motor-concepts for the top-E21. a 4 and two 6-Zyl. The in-line-6 won because ist was less thursty an had less weight. That's the main reasons. It was the time, when gas-prices raised very fast. The oil-crises had reached Germany about 2 years before.
