My understanding is that it is the actual shock or Dampner insert diameter. I would measure the inner diameter of the strut housing (disassembly required.) I can tell you there is a very noticeable diffrence in the inserts. If you are measuring the outside diameter of the strut housing it is aproximately 1mm on each side so subtract 2-3mm to approximate inner diameter.

Most of the variations i can find in the Mobile Tradition cd refer to French or Sweedish variations. And as I said there is reference to a
"With Tropical" in the dampner section.

: Thanx Robert, but I hope you are reffering to the shocks with (or diam.). Cause I´m from Iceland and there isn´t much of tech-talk in english here so I hope you forgive the "dumb-ass" questions. Anyway, the shocks diam. is 51mm on all my BMW´s (´81 318i, ´80 320/A, ´81 320/6) and because the 318i isn´t supposed to have but 45mm it made me wonder if I was messuring the right thing. And to be completly stupid: Isn´t it messured on the leg (shock) under the lower springretainer?
: With thanx for your patience.
