"Since I don't know how to read German on my fusebox cover, I couldn't figure out where the relay is."
I thing the word is _klimaanlage_ or often _klima_ for short, but my cousins use Swiss dialect, which may differ from standard German.
": 2) Other than getting a new one to swap out, anyone know how to bypass the AC relay ?"
If you have a proper wiring diagram, you can use a jumper wire (short piece with male connectors at each end) to connect between the hot input into
the output wire to the compressor in the relay's pin positions -- back in the early days of K-Jetronic injection, like my son's '78 320 has, we always carried such a jumper to be ready for frequent fuel pump relay failures.
": 3) Do the bubbles in the sight glass indicate freon loss ?"
Perhaps, but only for sure if the compressor is running -- it may have just been still going through its shut down ritual after the compressor stopped.
": 4) With enough freon loss, does this force the AC clutch from engagement? "
Yes, on factory air units there is a pressure sensor to do this to protect the compressor, and this sensor seems to fail on some kinds (I know SAABs better than BMW because I can cuss in Swedish) just as often or more often than the relay.
": 5) Any other ideas for me to check ?"
Does your model have one of those full-throttle switches which disengages the compressor when you floor the throttle to relieve the motor of AC power loss? They can stick or fail, too.
I'm sorry that I only know one BMW -- my son's old junker -- and don't have my Haynes manual available here to get the correct pin numbers and relay location for you, but I know SAAB and Volvo better.
: Thanks in advance for assisting.
