I have an ’82 320 with the sport package. The engine has 330,000 km but was running very strong up to now. I use 15/50 Mobile one, changed every 5000 km. The car is bone stock. At exactly 3500 rpm the engine, sounds like it’s coming from the back near the output shaft or even further back, makes a terrible squealing sound. It sounds like a bearing or a loose fan belt. The engine will not rev past this point (3500). The problem is not affected by engaging / disengaging the clutch. The problem has all of a sudden stopped and the engine revs freely up to 6,500 rpm plus with no noise. When the noise is present, the car feels sluggish below 3,500 but still drives. I am stumped! Thanks in advance for any advice you may provide.
