As we all know the e21 M10 engine generates quite a bit of noise for it's size. I know I've seen a few posts talking about how loud it is inside the cab when you're pushin' those revs above 3-grand. Well here's a tip that may help you out. I just did my first oil change with a full synthetic oil. My '82 320i has 177.7k miles on it, the local autoshop had a deal on cases of sythetics so I went for it. I got Mobil 1 15-50w Tri-synthetic (the red cap) and as soon as I started it up, I noticed it was much quieter. I car pool and even the people I car pool with noticed the noise level had dropped noticebly inside the cab. So...if the noise of the ol' M10 is a bit much for you, and you can put out the extra $$$ for full synthetic oil, I'd give it a shot. Of course I'd recommend a good oil filter (here's were some companies get some free advertising) like MANN, Mahle, or Purolator, all OEM brands for BMW, NOT Fram. Good luck to you all!
