I'm trying to help a friend with an '80 320i. When trying to start the car on Friday, it backfired bad enough to blow all four injectors out of the head.
After replacing the injectors, the car did fire but it won't idle without holding the throttle down. I looked all over for a vacuum leak but couldn't find one. After snooping for a while, it looked like the manifold gasket had a small piece missing.
To make a long story short, I pulled the manifold away from the head and the gasket looks fine (ugh). I'm not sure how to proceed. It seems like it still a lot of work to get the intake off to check the rubber underneath. Is there a common failure that happens when these things backfire?
I'd really appreciate any help. Thanks,
Matt.
