Luckily one side pulled out so I had an idea what was going on. The cable as it comes from the back of the backing plate has a tube that goes up and then joins and attaches inside the tube that is fixed to the car. The cable tube inserts into the car's fixed tube about 1/2 inch. I just took some pliers and twisted the brake tube at the connection to release the rust at the connection the end of the tube. After that a little pulling got the piece to pull out and separate.
