Eight months ago when I was in the market for an E21, I read numerous info and basically #1 thing repeatedly cited for buyers to look out for was RUST. Nearly anything mechanical could be easily corrected, but not rust. The major rust areas to focus on were the rocker panels, the shock towers inside the trunk, trunk opening lip, and cutouts for housing the rear lighting assembly. THe #2 area to look out for is major accident stuff, where the subframes were replaced, and unibody had been straightened. These repairs tend to weaken existing sheetmetal and will cause other problems with alignment and wheel shimmy at the very least, and may not absorb the maximum energy levels in an accident.
Hi All!
I'm looking for a nice BMW to purchase as a daily driver (my '85 635 has become sort of a garage queen) and I'm researching E28s and E21s. I've got a handle on what I'd choose in an E28, but what is generally considered the best year for E21s? I've been told the model to get would be an '82-'83 320is. . .agreed? Any special trouble area to watch out for? Thanks for your help!
