This part is simple to replace and should take you about two minutes tops. You only need a philips screwdriver to remove the cover and plastic plate. HOwever, if you are only replacing the crank handle and not the assembly (handle & plastic plate), then you will need a general duty snap ring plier to expand a 1/2" snap ring off/on the crank handle to secure it through the plastic plate. Two screws then holds the assembly to the sunroof mechanism.

When I was going through a junkyard to find this part, I was somewhat surprised to see that over 90% of the junkers had this part stripped out. It appears to be a popular part in need of replacement. I ended up getting this part off of an early E30. They are identical to the E21.
