Check the rubber gaskets inside the hood. The one across the cowl and the one on the hood itself just ahead of the cool air intake grid. Either of these is leaking, fumes can escape over the windscreen, over the top and into the skylight (sunroof?). Check the trunk rubber, too. It may be fooling you in that you get fumes from the trunk when the roof is open because it evacuates the car better to have it open and will pull air from everywhere.

If you have gas fumes and recently had the sender unit out, check the little access door under the back seat for proper fit of the pad that seals it to the body's floor... OR the return tube in the trunk has shrunk and pulled out of the inlet pipe for the gas filler. It hides up and over the right rear wheel well, under that funny little plastic tank on some cars..
