ring job with engine in car? (archive)

Has anybody ever done this, my co-workers 77 320i is quite smokey, and I told him I'd help him out. The reason I want to do it in the car is that both of my engine stands are in use, but I do have room enough to park his car in my shop. We're going to rebuild the head as well. Is doing rings with block still in a total PITA? Thanx, Al
