I'm looking into modifying my 320i so it can give all these little Hondas a run for their money on weekend nights. The main thing is:

Should I look into modifying the existing engine (2.0L upgrades, etc), or should I seek to replace the entire engine with something like one from an M3?

This car won't be a daily driver but still needs to be somewhat inspection worthy and may eventually see some real track time.

Any opinions are appreciated.

I was thinking about doing the same with my '83, then realized that the geometry of the e21 sucks and so does the 1.8L engine. That's not to say that these little guys aren't reliable and dependable, and get great gas mileage... You might want to think about turbocharging your existing motor, or swapping in a baby six (from an e21 323i). You could also dump fuel injection in favor of going with dual sidedrafts.
