I have the same rough idle problem, but it gets worse, since the engine just sputters and dies on me when I step on the accelerator. When I take it to the mechanic he'll pull out the plugs and they'll be reddish in color. After changing all 6 spark plugs and adjustment of the timing the car runs fine, but the rough idle comes back within a month! The temporary solution I've worked out is turn up the idle to 1100-1200, but that's a short term fix until I figure things out.

I have a 1981 320i and have not as yet modified the engine. About every three months or so my car starts to idle very rough and misses. I take it into my shop of choice and every time the spark plug on the number three cylinder needs changing. After I change the plug all is well and I can again idle without sputtering.
